Nipani CMC: JD(S) to expel its members

Special Correspondent

They had supported a controversial resolution

BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to expel party members in the Nipani City Municipal Council (CMC) for supporting a resolution urging the Centre to give its opinion to the Supreme Court on the border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The CMC is ruled by the Janata Dal (Secular) and the party has a strength of 17 in the 31-member council.

Praveen Bhadale and other members of the Janata Dal (Secular) supported the resolution that demanded merger of Marathi-speaking areas including Belgaum, Khanapur and Nipani with Maharashtra.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Janata Dal (Secular) State unit president Merajuddin Patel and the former Minister Leeladevi R. Prasad said that the party had issued notice to the CMC members asking them why they should not be expelled from the party for supporting the resolution which was against the interests of the State. “We will expel from the party all those who have supported the resolution,” Mr. Patel said.

The resolution was moved by Mr. Bhadale and backed by Congress CMC member Raja Pathan.

The first meeting of the CMC was convened in Nipani on Thursday.

Earlier, the municipality had moved a resolution stating that Marathi-speaking areas in the Belgaum district should be merged with Maharashtra.

Opposing the resolution in the CMC, activists of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike staged a protest in Nipani on Friday.

Notice

Staff Correspondent from Belgaum writes:

The party’s Belgaum district unit president Ashok Pujari has issued show cause notice to Mr. Bhadale. CMC president Subhangini Joshi said that there was no reason for protests by Kannada Rakshana Vedike activists on Friday. “It is nothing but politics,” she said.

On the basis of a complaint by the CMC, the police have arrested 16 persons in connection with the incident.
