Staff Reporter

THENI: A special police team led by sub-inspector Abdul Rahim rescued a man within 24 hours of his abduction by a Salem-based gang for ransom.

Muthaiah (55) of Theni, who went for shopping on Friday morning, did not return home till evening.

An unidentified person telephoned to his wife Jayalakshmi and told her that a gang abducted Muthaiah. She had to pay Rs.4 lakh failing which her husband would be killed.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Jayalakshmi, the police traced the mobile phone number of the anonymous caller and found the gang was in Salem. When the police reached Gugai area, the gang left Muthiah near a bridge and fled.

The police brought him back to Theni from Salem on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the police in Coimbatore, Erode and Salem districts were alerted to nab the gang, which had escaped from Salem.
