BHUBANESWAR: A young doctor of the city-based Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) died after plunging into a half-constructed bridge along the road connecting Sainik School Square and Nalco Square late on Friday. The victim was identified as Surya Narayan Gochhayat (32). The young doctor was coming to hospital on his two-wheeler when he could not spot the barricade-less pit on the road. Gochhayat sustained severe injury on his head while his left leg got pierced by an iron rod, which was left open. He was found dead on the construction site on Saturday morning. “The construction site was neither blocked with drums nor was there any diversion sign. The doctor, who was driving a bike, might have failed to negotiate the trench in the darkness,” Investigating Officer U. N. Singh said. The police officer said the construction work on the road would have been one-month-old. However, no care was taken to ensure safety of commuters who used the road stretch, Mr. Singh said. This is not the only road in the city where half-constructed road works posed danger to commuters. The road stretch between Khandagiri Square and Pokhariput has been under for repair and widening for several months now.KIMS authorities lodged a complaint with Chandrasekhar policestating that the unprotected half-constructed bridge along the road had led to death of a doctor of their organisation. Chief Engineer (roads) Nalini Ranjan Pradhan said, “there should have been proper barricading for the construction work. If there was no protection, then it could be termed negligence.” “We will certainly inquire into the matter. If anybody is found guilty, appropriate action will be taken,” Mr. Pradhan said.
