THENI: Total savings of all self-help groups in the district has touched Rs.37.43 crore. Their hard work, team spirit, cooperation and coordination among other groups have enhanced rural economy and ensured their economic independence, according to A. Veeranan, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency. He was delivering a special address at a function to mark the International Women’s Day here on Saturday. Performance of self-help groups was remarkable and amazing. A majority of SHGs had been manufacturing organic manure, including vermicompost, in large scale to meet the growing demand not only in the district but also in Kerala. Most of the cardamom growers in Kerala had been using only organic manure to grow cardamom. Mother Teresa Self-Help Group at Murthinaickenpatti in Chinnamanur union and Federation of SHGs at Vadapudhupatti panchayat had been recommended for the best SHG award and for Manimegalai award this year. Efforts were on to market their products and create adequate infrastructure to expand their market base, he added. With able assistance from the DRDA, a total of 9,360 self-help groups comprising 1.48 lakh women members, had been functioning in the district. The DRDA started 487 women self-help groups and 200 men self-help groups this year and basic training was imparted to all their members. Rs.90,000 had been allotted to give entrepreneurial training to members of SHGs. Rs.1.8 crore had been allotted to offer revolving fund to 1,080 SHGs in urban areas to run their business, he said. DindigulThe International Women’s Day was celebrated by voluntary and social organisations in various places. Over, 504 graduates, including 46 university rank-holders, received their degree certificates at a convocation at M.V.M. Arts College for Women.
