Journalists concerned over portrayal of women
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Gender Council of the Delhi Union of Journalists has expressed concern over the lot of women and declining standards of their portrayal in various media and demanded an amendment to the Working Journalists Act to include all personnel from the audio-visual and electronic media. To mark International Women’s Day here on Saturday, the Gender Council wrote to Members of Parliament apprising them of the depreciating status of women in media.
“On almost all parameters, the media shows a worrisome decline in values. The image of woman being projected is reinforcing their commoditisation. The increasing emphasis globalisation has led to crass commercialisation of the media in general,” said a DUJ spokesperson.
In its open letter, the Gender Council has urged the media to “look inwards and review its role in a rapidly changing economy to ensure transparency and aid equitable gender development”.
It demanded formation of a Media Commission on the lines of the First Press Commission with equal representation for women and other disempowered groups.
