PROUD MOMENT: The all-women crew of Air India that operated a flight on the Chennai-Colombo-Chennai in Chennai on Saturday. CHENNAI: As part of the International Women’s Day celebrations, Air India operated an all-women crew flight from Chennai in the international sector on Saturday. The Air India flight IC 573/574 was operated in the Chennai-Colombo-Chennai sector. Capt. M. Deepa and First Officer N.R.Veda Bakavati operated the flight from Chennai with six women cabin crew. E.A.Varghese, Regional Executive Director, Air India, Southern Region, said in Chennai Indian and Air India had employee strength of 1,800. Of them, 350 were women employees. The organisation has 68 pilots and 20 of them were Commanders and nine in the rank of executive officers, he said. The all-women crew would be received by a woman Country Manager of Air India in Colombo. Capt. Ms. Deepa said: “It is for the first time an all-women crew from Chennai is operating a flight in the international sector.” The flight had passenger strength of 100 plus of which nearly 50 per cent were women, she said. The organisation always supported and encouraged all the women who stepped out boldly, added Ms. Deepa who has more than 5,000 hours of flying to her credit. The flight duration from Chennai to Colombo was an hour and 20 minutes.
