Karunanidhi rules out RS seat for PMK

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has virtually ruled out a seat for Pattali Makkal Katchi in the coming Rajya Sabha elections.

In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Karunanidhi said the DMK had been following a healthy practice of sharing Rajya Sabha seats among its alliance partners. It gave the opportunity to the PMK in 2004, to the Communist Party of India in 2007 and now to the Congress as it wanted an additional seat. After getting an assurance from other alliance parties, it decided to give a seat to the CPI (Marxist).

Though the DMK could win three seats in the elections, it had decided to follow its earlier practice of giving its surplus votes to an alliance party. In that order the next chance could be given to the Pattali Makkal Katchi in 2010. The DMK would not have had any reservation in allotting a seat to Union Health Minister R. Anbumani if his term in Rajya Sabha came to end now.

The reality was that it was not possible to share the available seats among the Congress, the CPI (M) and the PMK. He wanted the alliance parties to realise the ground situation and cooperate with the DMK in finding an amicable solution.
