Remarks of CJ criticised
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: Members of women’s rights group, Vimochana, wore black and distributed pamphlets at the venue condemning earlier statements of Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph and Chairperson of Karnataka Human Rights Commission S.R. Naik, which “blamed women for the violence they face in our cities”.
The pamphlet said that they were “deeply shocked” by their statements which “trivialised” the sustained struggle of women and women’s groups against violence faced by them.
The letter was referring to statements made by Mr. Cyriac Joseph and Mr. Naik on two occasions on February 8.
While Mr. Cyriac Joseph is said to have exhorted women to dress modestly so as to not face violence, Mr. Naik is reported to have said that women should not venture out late in the night for their own safety .
