Security issues taken stock of

BANGALORE: Issues concerning security and connectivity to the new international airport at Devanahalli and other steps to be taken before the scheduled launch of the airport on March 30 were discussed during a meeting of top Central and State government officials with representatives of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) here on Saturday.

Union Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla, it is learnt, took stock of the development, especially issues concerning connectivity and readiness for the commercial launch.

Sources said that the meeting had been convened to evaluate the status of the infrastructure projects taken up to aid better transportation to the Devanahalli airport.

Lack of facilities

It is learnt that the Inspector-General and Director General of Police K.R. Srinivasan expressed his displeasure over the lack of facilities being provided to set up the police stations for traffic and law and order.

Officials of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) sought office space to monitor the round-the-clock bus service they will be providing to passengers.

Sources said that issues such as preparedness in terms of providing lighting and patrolling facility from the city limits to the airport at Devanahalli, widening of roads, clearance of garbage, cleaning of roads and other civic issues were discussed in the meeting. The issue of upgrading and strengthening of alternative roads to the airport too came up at the meeting. Senior officials including Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao; Principal Secretary, Infrastructure, V.P. Baligar; Principal Secretary, Public Works, Sudhir Krishna; Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority Commissioner Subir Hari Singh; Police Commissioner N. Achuta Rao and Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner S. Subramanya were among those who were present along with BIAL representatives including Chief Executive Officer Albert Brunner were present.
