JAIPUR: The United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) will have its maiden foray into Rajasthan on Sunday when five former Chief Ministers of the constituent parties address a farmers’ rally at Vidhyadhar Nagar on the outskirts of Jaipur. The prime mover of the rally, coming in the wake of a massive show of strength by the Congress this past week, is the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), which had played spoilsport for the Congress in the 2003 elections. Those scheduled to participate include former Chief Ministers, Om Prakash Chautala of Haryana, Mulayam Singh of Uttar Pradesh, Farooq Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir, Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh and Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand. Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh and Vrindavan Goswami of Asom Gana Parishad will also address the rally. Though many parties are involved in UNPA, it is going to be basically an INLD show for which the party secretary Ajay Singh Chautala -- who has been an MLA from Rajasthan as well -- has been doing rounds of districts. Ajay Singh Chautala, who is the convener of the rally, reviewing the arrangements here on the eve of the event, claimed participation of lakhs of farmers. The rally would mark the start of UNPA’s election campaign in Rajasthan, he said. Arrangements have been made for over 5,000 buses and three trains for transporting public to the venue, he said.
