GUNTUR: Andhra Pradesh has prepared an ambitious Rs.1,450-crore budget for Sarva Siksha Abhiyan for the coming financial year (2008-09), according to Chairman of the Legislative Committee on SSA Nadendla Manohar. This will give a major boost to primary education. After three days of touring various mandals in the district, Mr. Manohar said that the committee had identified Palnadu area of Guntur as one that required some serious attention. While Guntur district was among the top five districts in the State in performance/implementation, some 3.8 per cent children in the 6-14 age group were out of school and literacy levels were much lower compared to some of the backward districts. A distinctionEast Godavari and Chittoor were leading in the implementation of the SSA schemes and teachers in East Godavari even dared to ask people in 32 mandals to show a child out of school and earn Rs.150 reward, observed State Literacy Mission CEO and SSA State Project Director K. Chandramouli. The government had spent Rs.425 crores on SSA during the current financial year and expects to receive another Rs.300 crores before the month-end. Guntur district had received Rs.16 crores and would be granted another Rs.4 crores to complete its targets in improving the quality of education and construction of additional classrooms. The focus of the construction activity would on providing toilets for all girls’ hostels and drinking water facility at all schools and hostels, the team members told reporters. Mahabubnagar MLA C. Rammohan Reddy, Chilakaluripet MLA M Rajasekhar, MLA from Nalgonda Palla Venkata Reddy were also members of the committee that toured 14 districts so far.
