Final notification on colour code for school buses to be ready soon

CHENNAI: Schools and colleges in the State can soon expect a circular insisting that vehicles they run for students be painted sky blue.

The Transport Department will issue the directive to educational institutions.

“The draft notification has already been published. The final notification will be ready soon,” Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh told The Hindu recently.

In 2007, educational institutions were asked to ensure that the vehicles operated by them were painted shell white.

The managements of several institutions complained that shell white made it difficult to distinguish between their vehicles and those run by Infotech companies.

It was for this reason that the new colour was chosen. The Transport Department invited feedback from the stakeholders and incorporated feasible suggestions before deciding on sky blue, Mr. Singh said.

An easily identifiable logo would be prescribed for vehicles run by private operators to transport schoolchildren, Mr. Singh said.

The private operators were not expected to adhere to the colour code, as they would transport passengers other than students, officials said.

Apparently, some Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the State are urging institutions applying for renewal of fitness certificates for their vehicles to change to the new colour.

In at least one case, a school was not given the new certificate until it changed the colour of its vehicle.

A school in Coimbatore faced this problem recently. With no official intimation from either the Education or Transport Department, the management was not aware of the directive on the new colour code for vehicles operated by educational institutions.
