Rahul for more role for youth in politics

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: The youth should be given adequate representation in the country’s politics, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi said on Saturday, second day of his “Discovery of India” journey in Orissa.

Speaking at a meeting at Gunupur in Rayagada district to pay tributes to his father and the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, Mr. Gandhi lamented that no party, including the Congress, had ensured sufficient share for the youth in their ranks till date.

The Congress was in for a revamp and he would strive to involve more youths in the party organisation, he said.

It was in Gunupur that Rajiv Gandhi addressed his last public meeting, a day before his assassination in Sriperumbudur. Observing that the voice of the youth had faded away with the death of his father 17 years ago, Mr. Gandhi said frontal organisations of the Congress would welcome youths to work with them in the coming days.

The MP, who visited a tribal hamlet in Koraput district on Friday evening, expressed serious concern over Orissa’s backwardness. His impression that Uttar Pradesh was backward in many fields, including education, had changed after his visit to Orissa, he said.

After the Gunupur meeting, Mr. Gandhi visited a sports hostel at Panposh near Rourkela in Sundargarh district that had produced a number of prominent hockey players. He discussed the problems facing hockey players in the region with the inmates. Later, he addressed a rally at Bamra.

In the evening, Mr. Gandhi reached the industrial township of Angul and interacted with workers’ unions.
