Government floats tenders

For construction of tsunami shelters

Nagercoil: The Government has floated tenders for the construction of 20,000 permanent shelters for the tsunami-affected fisherfolk in the State on an outlay of Rs. 480 crore with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank, said the Project Director, Tsunami Rehabilitation Implementation (Rural Development and Panchayat Raj), V. Thangavelu.
Reviewing ongoing works with Collector B. Jothi Nirmala here on Thursday, he said that more than 10-year-old houses situated within 200 metres of high tidal line would be replaced with new ones. As many as 1,050 houses would be constructed in Kanyakumari district in the first phase. Another 1,398 houses would be built in the next phase. The beneficiaries had been identified by the district administration.
World Bank-project
Besides, with World Bank assistance, 20,000 houses would be built for the fisherfolk in the State living 200 metres to one km off the sea. Of these, 1,200 would be built in Kanyakumari district.
The Collector said that 3,496 self-help groups in the district have been benefited by way of receiving revolving funds to the tune of Rs.9.4 crore for augmentation of their livelihood.
