‘Reduce role of TANFED in agro input sale’

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli District Agro Inputs Traders’ Association has appealed to the State Government not to divert the maximum quantity of available fertilizer and other agriculture inputs to Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation (TANFED) “since this attempt would wipe out small licensed traders in the business”.

Adopting a resolution to this effect at its 21st meeting held here on Saturday, the declaration said that of the 11,000-odd licensed agro inputs traders in Tamil Nadu, more than 80 per cent of them were small players and hence any move of giving huge quantity of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs to TANFED for sale would virtually put a permanent end to their business.

Instead, the available fertilizer and other inputs should be equally distributed to the licensed traders based on the requirement in their regions.

Traders as witnesses

Another resolution urged the officials to cite the traders as witnesses while the manufacturer as accused whenever spurious agro inputs are seized. Currently, the traders are cited as ‘accused’ in the cases pertaining to the seizure of adulterated agricultural inputs.

The president of Tirunelveli District Agro Inputs Traders’ Association, T.M. Gulam Mohideen, presided over the meeting, in which joint secretary of the association, Minnal Mohamed Ali, president of Tamil Nadu Agro Inputs Traders’ Association, P. Vijay Nataraj, honorary president of Tamil Nadu Agro Inputs Traders’ Association, P. Rengasamy, the Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, Tirunelveli, S. Velsamy, the Assistant Director, Department of Quality Control, Tirunelveli, K. Soundararajan and others spoke.
