Stability of government not our agenda: Yechury

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Stepping up pressure on the United Progressive Alliance government on the issue of the India-U.S. nuclear deal, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday warned that its agenda was “not the stability” of the Congress-led coalition.

“Our agenda is the nuclear deal and not the stability of the government or an early or late election. We are opposed to the deal because we think it is not in the interest of the country,” CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury told reporters here.

He said whether the government would go in for early elections was for it to decide. Mr. Yechury recalled that External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had said survival of the government was more important than the deal and had ruled out the possibility of early general elections.

He reminded the government that there was a written agreement in the UPA-Left joint committee that the draft safeguards agreement with the IAEA would be brought back to it without initialling it.

“It is only after the committee takes a decision that the government can take the next step,” he added.
