V-C recalls contributions of college founder College selected as a practice venue for Games NEW DELHI: Pointing out that globalisation was excluding some people from development and eroding social stability, Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari on Saturday said the globalisation agenda must at all times relate to the country’s ground realities. Speaking at the 82nd Annual Day celebrations of Delhi University’s Shri Ram College of Commerce here, he said the country was well endowed with human and material resources. “The progress achieved by the country in the six decades of Independence proves it in ample measure. The rate of growth in recent years has been particularly impressive. The momentum is set to continue. The interaction of the economy with the outside world stands enhanced in good measure,” he said. Describing himself as a citizen only partially initiated in the intricacies and mysteries of the world of business, Mr. Ansari said he was not an economist but understood a bit of political economy. “Business is not an exercise in a vacuum. The question is of the environment in which business functions, its instruments of governance, and the manner in which it interacts with society.” Referring to the management of the State’s treasury and economy on Kautilya’s Arthashastra, the Vice-President said a great deal of common sense advice was given about how to achieve and sustain economic prosperity. “He makes the interesting observation that just as elephants are needed to catch elephants, so does one need wealth to capture more wealth. In other words, wealth plays a role in the generation of wealth.” Earlier, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental recalled the contributions of the SRCC founder Shri Ram, crediting him for inculcating among students a spirit of entrepreneurship. SRCC Governing Body Chairman Ajay S. Shriram announced that the college had been chosen as a practice venue for the women wrestling and rugby events during the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Before his address, the Vice-President honoured six students with gold medals for excelling in academics. Later, students excelling in academics, extra-curricular activities and sports were honoured with various awards by eminent alumnus S.N.P. Punj.
