“Quoted out of context”

Sarabjit Pandher

Chandigarh: Kashmir Singh, who was released by Pakistan after 35 years of incarceration on the charge of espionage, said on Saturday he would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking compensation for the “apathy” shown by the Indian government to him and his family while he was in prison.

Talking to The Hindu at his Nangal Khiladian village in Hoshiarpur district, Mr. Singh said his wife, Paramjit Kaur, petitioned the High Court in his absence seeking compensation for the family as he had gone to Pakistan on duty. In her petition, she said her husband was the sole breadwinner and since his arrest in Pakistan, there had been no support from the government. She said she had to do odd jobs to feed her children.

Asked about his remark, made here on Friday, that he had gone to Pakistan to spy for the Indian Military Intelligence, Mr. Singh said the media had quoted him out of context.
