New Delhi: The Election Commission has deferred its hearing by two weeks on the claims of rival factions of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) to the name and flag. The hearing was scheduled to take place here on March 10. The Commission sources told The Hindu that the hearing was adjourned on a request from the group led by L. Ganesan and Gingee Ramachandran seeking three weeks to furnish additional documents in support of their claim that their party was the original MDMK as demonstrated in the general council meeting held by them. Sources said the splinter group had been asked to submit the documents by March 21 and the date of hearing would be fixed thereafter. Refuting the claim the MDMK leader Vaiko produced documentary and video evidence to prove that the party led by him was the real and that it had expelled the rival claimants. Mr. Vaiko, who was in Delhi in connection with the hearing, told The Hindu that his party objected to the Commission granting time to the rival group saying that it was intended to buy time. He wondered “what the rival group will produce which they could not produce in the last 13 months.”
