Sharmila’s re-arrest condemned

NEW DELHI: The Asian Centre for Human Rights has condemned the re-arrest of social activist Irom Sharmila by the Manipur police on Saturday on the charge of attempt to suicide. She has been on fast since November 2000 demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Manipur.

Ms. Sharmila was released from judicial custody on Friday by a court in Imphal. She has been in detention since March 7, 2007.
