WELFARE MEASURES: Social Welfare Minister P.K. Sreemathy inaugurating a function organised by the Social Welfare Department in connection with International Women’s Day in the city on Saturday. — THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government proposes to institute awards for the best supervisors and child development project officers (CDPOs) of the Integrated Child Development Scheme from the coming year. Social Welfare Minister P.K. Sreemathy said while inaugurating the official State-level function organised to mark the International Women’s Day here on Saturday that the award would be given to one person in each district. She stated that the pension sanctioned to the anganwadi workers would be distributed at the earliest. A sum of Rs.2 crore was set apart for the purpose. She also promised to set up primary facilities for women in towns with the cooperation of the local bodies. The pension for widows had been extended to those with sons also. The assistance under various welfare schemes and pensions had been increased and steps taken to distribute them through banks on a monthly basis. The arrears amounting to Rs.8 crore to orphanages had been cleared. The assistance given to anganwadis for buying vegetables had been increased. The scheme for distributing food at Rs.2 a packet for patients and those accompanying them at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, would be extended to the MCH here later. A phased scheme would be implemented for providing free treatment and food to the poor. Around 7,000 new anganwadis had been sanctioned. Twenty five per cent of the 139 posts of supervisors created for them would be reserved for the present anganwadi workers. The government was setting up a gender advisory board for the first time in the country to ensure that 10 per cent of the Plan funds were spent for women. The posts of 14 Protection Officers had been created to check domestic violence. A sum of Rs.20 crore of the additional assistance of Rs.60 crore sanctioned by the Planning Commission would be spent on the health sector, she said. She presented awards to 37 anganwadi workers and 34 helpers.
