Police able to bring down crime last year: Commissioner Police station at Mannanthala proposed THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The services of flying squads functioning under the Police Control Room will be used for effective policing and curbing crime during the day, City Police Commissioner Ravada A. Chandrasekhar has said. He was addressing office-bearers of residents’ associations at the monthly meeting at the Armed Reserve Camp, Nandavanam, on Saturday. Mr. Chandrasekhar said people could approach the 14 flying squads stationed at various places in the city. This would be in addition to the services offered at police stations. He urged the people to interact with police personnel attached to the flying squads and bring to their notice traffic problems and other local issues. Mr. Chandrasekhar said the police had been able to bring down crime last year mainly owing to the effective functioning of Crime Sub-Inspectors (SIs) attached to police stations. Over 5,000 cases of drunk driving were detected. He said the city police had been able to solve over 25 cases of theft under Peroorkada, Vattiyoorkavu, Fort and Museum police stations. “A spurt in thefts during the last week of February had been reported from across the State. We are actively pursuing the cases in the capital and have stepped up the patrolling in vehicles and by foot. The residents’ associations and the citizens should cooperate with the police,” he said. On the demand to post more personnel to reduce burden on the staff at the Peroorkada police station, he said a police station at Mannanthala had been proposed to the government. He instructed the Station House Officer of the Peroorkada police station to ensure that autorickshaws and tempos did not create problems at Peroorkada junction and the entrance to Indira Nagar. Following complaints that cobblers had taken over the footpath near East Fort, Mr. Chandrasekhar issued instructions to the SI, Fort, to ensure that they did not cause problems for pedestrians. Policemen felicitatedAt the meeting, Mr. Chandrasekhar felicitated Head Constables D. Jayaraj and K.S. Sureshkumar of the Karamana police station for nabbing N. Prabhu, a prisoner, who escaped from the Central Jail, Poojappura, on Friday morning. Constable V. Sanjay, attached to the Poonthura police station, was felicitated with a cash award for nabbing a person who snatched the gold chain of a woman during the Attukal Pongala.
