Thiruvananthapuram: Seminars and special medical camps for women marked International Women’s Day celebrations in the city on Saturday. The Social Welfare Department and the Health Department jointly conducted medical camps for women in over 50 hospitals across the State on Saturday. The State-level inauguration of the camps was held at Women and Children Hospital, Thycaud. Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy inaugurated the camp. Hundreds of women attended the camp where many specialists were present. A health education seminar was also held. Ms. Sreemathy later inaugurated a ‘One-Day Home’ at Poojappura. It is intended to provide short-stay facility to women reaching the city for various requirements. Medical camps and cultural programmes were organised by the CRPF Wives’ Welfare Association, Pallippuram. Welfare activities and vocational training programmes to be taken up by the association in the next one year were announced on the occasion. A comprehensive health screening camp for women was organised by the Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation, along with the Medical Department of Thiruvananthapuram railway division. As many as 150 women participated in the camp, held at Railway Hospital, Pettah. The day was also celebrated by Canara Bank Mahila Branch at Pattom. Nearly 15 women from Russia, from various walks of life, interacted with women in the city. The session, arranged by the Russian Cultural Centre, focussed on the contributions made by women in the socio-cultural sphere in Russia. Women’s day was celebrated with much fanfare in Russia and men took the lead in organising various programmes on the day, the delegates said.
