They will be introduced to DNA extraction and fingerprinting Bangalore: A group of artists will get a crash course in the rigours of advanced biological techniques at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) as part of a hands-on biological art workshop. The artists, from India and abroad, will get to experiment at NCBS’s art labs and take part in a debate on bioethics during the five-day event. Scientists at NCBS will introduce the group of 15 artists to DNA extraction, fingerprinting, genetic engineering, plant and animal tissue culture and basic tissue-engineering techniques. “The tools of modern biology are demonstrated through artistic engagement. This in turn gives voice to a philosophical and ethical exploration into the extent of human intervention with other living things,” says artist Oron Catts of the University of Western Australia’s SymbioticA laboratory. It is the first research laboratory of its kind that enables artists to engage in a Biological Science department. At the end of the week, there will be a public discussion on the ideas explored in the workshop. The event is masterminded by Bangalore’s Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology. Registration for the workshop will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday. For details, mail Suchitha Gowda at suchitha@srishti.ac.in
