Raising awareness: The programme officer of the water literacy foundation, Balachandra Jabashetty, delivering a lecture on ‘Water and Woman’ in Dharwad on Sunday. DHARWAD: A seminar on “Water and Woman” was held at the Government Teachers’ Training College for Women here on Sunday to mark the International Women’s Day celebrations. Delivering a lecture, the programme officer of the water literacy foundation, Balachandra Jabashetty, underscored the need for judicious use of water and the role of women in ensuring it. “There is a need for developing a culture of judicious use of water. Everybody has a role to play in preventing wastage of water. If no step is taken to stop wastage of water and help recharge water table, there is every possibility of a water famine by 2018,” he said. He said that with the objective of raising awareness on water conservation a “Walk for water” would be organised here on March 20. S.K. Puranik, professor, Department of Mines and Geology of Karnatak University, said that community participation was essential for proper water management and rainwater harvesting. Mohan Nagammanavar, member of the management board of the college, underscored the need for active participation by all in water literacy programmes. Presiding over the function, Parvati Vastrad, principal of the college, urged girl students to take oath that they used water in a judicious manner. Lecturers Saroja Kulkarni, P.S. Angadi, and Prabhakar Lamannavar, and member of the Zilla Kannada Jagruti Samiti Gurumurthy Yaragambalimath were present on the occasion. On Saturday, Uttar Karnataka Lekhakiyara Sangha organised Dr. Sarojini Shintri Endowment Programme here to mark International Women’s Day. Speaking on the occasion, cardiologist Vijayalaxmi Balekundri urged women to fight for their rights.
