For awareness: Chairman of Oulgaret municipality N.S. Jayabal and chairperson of Puducherry Women’s Commission S. Kamalini at the marriage registration camp in Puducherry on Sunday. PUDUCHERRY: To educate women on their basic rights in a marriage, the Puducherry Women’s Commission organised two marriage registration camps on Sunday. The camps issued 650 applications and received 450 filled-in forms. “In the absence of marriage registration, the husband tends to deny the relationship during court cases, especially when the wife claims maintenance. We want to help uneducated, poor and downtrodden women as they do not know their basic rights,” chairperson of the Commission S. Kamalini said. In the regular process of marriage registration, they have to approach the courts, spend money and time. On the contrary, the procedures are done free of cost at the camps, she added. “Apart from these camps, we also look into general complaints from the women. In the last three years, we have received 735 complaints, of which 90 per cent have been disposed. The complaints are primarily on family disputes,” she said. Most of the cases were solved through counselling sessions, Kamalini pointed out. Chairman of Oulgaret municipality N.S.J. Jayabal inaugurated the camp.
