Television sets distributed

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 799 television sets were distributed to the weaker sections at two villages near Viralimalai on Saturday. The beneficiaries included 407 persons of Nangupatti village panchayat and 392 persons of Perumapatti village panchayat.
Speaking after distributing the television sets, the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy said that the assistance was being given as part of keeping the poll promises made by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Job Scheme
He appealed to the villagers to take maximum advantage of the Rural Employment Guarantee programme to be implemented in the district from the next financial year.
The District Collector D. Uthirakkumaran, who presided over the function, said that a target of 72,500 beneficiaries had been fixed for the current financial year for the free colour television set scheme and 54,378 sets had been distributed so far.
The Viralimalai panchayat union chairman M. P. Mani and the District Revenue Officer G. Prakasam were among those who spoke.
