Spotlight on traffic problems at interactive session

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Issues related to traffic problems in the town were discussed at the first interactive session of “People’s Pulse,” a voluntary organisation floated by likeminded individuals, on Saturday.

Members of the organisation highlighted various problems in the presence of Superintendent of Police (Traffic) S. Kuppusamy and Superintendent of Police (North) V. Vijayakumar at the meeting, attended by retired officials from the Police Department, Road Transport Department and members of People’s Pulse.

S. Hemachandran, retired civil servant and People’s Pulse president, said suggestions included declaring business areas in the town as vehicle-free zones, regularisation of routes of town buses, strict enforcement of traffic rules, extending the functioning of traffic signals till 10 p.m. and regulation on flash road rokos.

Space for pedestrians had drastically reduced owing to encroachment of pavements by shop-owners, vendors and parking of vehicles on road sides, Mr. Hemachandran said.

Regarding lack of parking space in the town, the organisation said the issue could be resolved only when business establishments provided parking space for customers and employees, he said.

To encourage the public to make the most use of public transport services, town bus routes should be rationalised after consulting stakeholders such as consumer groups, residents and parents associations, employees union and transport organisations. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Kuppusamy said the suggestions would be placed before the Standing Committee on Traffic, chaired by the Chief Minister, for consideration.
