Letter evokes response

The letter ‘Expedite work on school buildings’ published in these columns on February 18 has moved the authorities concerned. The work on these two school buildings has been resumed and is in progress now. I thank The Hindu for publishing the letter and also the officials for swinging into action.

Trouble at ATMs

This is with reference to the shocking incident of a lady being murdered in Guntur for the sake of cash, which was reported in page 6 of this newspaper on March 1. Who is responsible for such a situation? Is it the bank authorities who do not seem to mind if two or more people enter ATM in the name of a queue, or is it the mistake of the lady? In Chirala, I have an account with one of the largest banks, and I’m sorry to say the condition of ATMs is worse than a ration shop where long queues are visible. Though one can find a slip on the door that only one person is allowed into the cabin, it does not seem to serve any purpose. It is high time the bank authorities did something about it. Also, every person using an ATM should object to flouting of rules.

Fill vacancies

The Railway Budget presented by Union Minister Lalu Prasad was prudent and benevolent, and we all appreciate the proposal to extend 50 per cent concession in fare to senior citizen women. It will be good if the same is extended to men too. Even though the sops offered are good, the issue of filling of vacant posts has not found a place in the budget. There are many vacancies caused by retirements and stoppage of fresh recruitment. Each TTE is doing the job of three to four persons. Still, the unemployment problem was totally forgotten by our Railway Minister. It will be good if the existing vacancies are filled and succour is provided to the unemployed.

Farmers’ welfare

It is, no doubt, a laudable gesture on the part of the Union Government to announce the loan waiver for farmers to the tune of Rs.60,000 crores. However, it is also a fact that only about 35 per cent of the farmers will benefit by this scheme, because of the limited number of farmers who can access institutional credit in our country. The State Government should come to the rescue of other farmers, who are at the mercy of moneylenders.
