A win-win deal?

The Union Finance Minister’s announcement in the Union Budget about opening of three more IITs in some of the least literate States according to national parameters -- Rajasthan, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh -- deserves to be welcomed.

The Rajasthan Government has proposed Kota as the location for setting up the new IIT -- a natural choice because of its high literacy rate, predominantly urban population and culture and considerably developed infrastructure to sustain the institution. But shouldn’t a less developed district with a low literacy rate and underdeveloped infrastructure be given an opportunity instead so as to stimulate overall development of the region?

As far as Kota is concerned, it already churns out the maximum number of IITians every year with its excellent coaching institutes. Now a new IIT coming up in the State will serve as the icing on the cake for the district. So Kota will have its hands full! It’s a win-win situation. Shubha Gupta,

Mobile woes

I bought a Nokia 6275 CDMA mobile phone with a Tata Indicom connection from TVH COCO, N-10, Connaught Place, on January 18.

I started facing problems from the very next day when I discovered that features like equaliser, speaker, recording facility, etc., were missing from the phone. I also found out that the offer promised to me (in which I was supposed to get one-year Tata-to-Tata talk time free), did not exist. When asked about it, the store representative flatly denied offering me any such scheme.

I tried calling a Nokia Customer Care centre to at least fix my defective handset, but in vain. Even showing the Nokia user’s guide to a representative at a Nokia Care Centre in Shakarpur did not help. All my problems persist.

Such treatment is not expected from the likes of Nokia and Tata. I request the authorities of both the companies to lend an ear to the woes of their customers and fix their problems. Priyanka Sharma,

Gurgaon calling

I want to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned a problem faced by many people living in Gurgaon. Recently, in the Kapashera border area, DTC buses going towards Delhi have started halting 500 metres ahead of their designated spot. They now halt in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office rather than on the border. This is causing a lot of problems, especially for the elderly and the differently-abled who now have to walk almost one kilometre to catch the bus.

I request the authorities to shift the stop to its earlier location for the convenience of the people.

Railways’ ways

It is surprising to see that Vivek Vihar railway station, just about 8 km from Delhi, is handled by only one booking clerk. Since its inception in 1976, this station has been functioning without any Station Superintendent, Ticket Collector, Announcer, Railway Protection Officer or even an Enquiry Office! The General Manager of Northern Railway had personally visited the station and ordered immediate appointment of an additional booking clerk. But nothing has been done about it so far. With 57 trains halting at the station and almost 15,000 commuters using it everyday, this stop has become a paradise for ticketless travellers.

Is anyone in Rail Bhavan listening?

MTNL responds

With reference to the complaint titled “Wrong number” in these columns (January 21), the fact is that MTNL has provided speeds up to 2 MBPS on all telephones of level 2381 and 2766 having broadband except the broadband plan Trai-B unlimited.

It is possible that due to some technical reason in the case of a particular telephone connection the speed may vary. This can be rectified as and when it comes to the notice of the concerned unit office of MTNL.

J.P. Sharma,

Public Relations Officer (Media), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, Office of the General Manager (Marketing), First Floor, Eastern Court, Janpath, New Delhi – 110 001.
