Orissa
Cricket of 1980s was as popular as of the modern day’s game. But why the today’s cricket is generating more controversies than before. The main culprit is the electronic media. During the India tour of Australia, all the news channels devoted more than 10 hours daily on the cricket pushing all other important issues to backburner. They made it cricket as a religion. They followed the cricketers from India to Australia and back. They prepared ground for huge reception for cricketers at New Delhi. When they were being given public reception, news channels suddenly picked up an issue if cricketers deserved such a volume of praise. When Indian team performed satisfactorily, they suddenly coined a verdict that India is on its way to become world champion. Please wait for few days, if the team somehow fared badly, these channels will waste no time criticising them. Sambit Pradhan Bhubaneswar No serious effortOrissa is fast acquiring the image of an always-aggrieved State. Be it Union budget or railway budget, it will always throw accusations that Centre is ignoring the State. But I am of the view that leaders of Orissa are incapable. For them the only privilege after being elected as MPs is they can avail free railway ticket and reserve a room at Orissa Bhawan at New Delhi. They forget what the people want. They were never seen pursuing Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for voluminous development grant for the State. A BJD-BJP Parliamentarian party went to submit a memorandum with the Railway Minister for just registering in media that they were serious. It is a political drama people of Orissa are tried of. Madan Mohan Tanti Cuttack Election gimmicksWith the elections getting nearer, the politicians of all hues have started highlighting the problems being faced by farmers and tribals in the State. The ruling parties in the State too are going to the open to claim that they are trying their best to end the plight of tribals and farmers. Going by the situation prevailing, it is clear that the politicians, primarily those belonging to the ruling parties, were out to make fools of every farmer and tribal as the later would not react to the governmental neglect in the manner in which the lawyers have been able to take up their demand for separate High Court benches in western and southern Orissa. It is high time the ruling parties should admit their failure that they had not been able to provide relief to the debt-burdened farmers and lakhs of landless tribals.
