BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to persuade the farmers of western Orissa to end their opposition to diversion of water from Hirakud reservoirs to industries, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday reiterated that water meant for irrigation would not be given to industries at any cost. Addressing a farmers’ rally at Bargarh, Mr. Patnaik said there should not be any doubt that his government was committed to the farmers’ cause. Efforts were on to ensure that water from Hirakud reached the tail ends of the canals so that no farmer would shortage of water for irrigation in the reservoir’s command area, Mr. Patnaik said. A number of Biju Janata Dal leaders and Ministers attended the farmers’ rally that was organised by the party.
