Boost to traditional medicine sought

TIRUPATI: The 3-day international seminar on ‘Medicinal Plants and Herbal Products’ which concluded in the SV University here on Sunday has adopted nearly a dozen resolutions on a wide range of issues connected with the fast-emerging field. One of the major recommendations was to support the ‘Global Genome Ayurveda Initiative’ and extend it to different regions so as to provide scientific basis to the system of traditional medicine.
Resolutions
Effective application of biotechnology tools, scientific documentation of the indigenous and traditional knowledge, development of a database providing Intellectual Property Rights to the rural communities in different countries, convergence of industry, researchers and farmers to develop agro-technology for new medicinal plants, identification of ‘hotspots’ for medicinal plant conservation and management in the forest and agro-forestry ecosystems by extending the ‘bio-village’ concept, setting up of an international gene bank exclusively for developing a germplasm of high value Indian medicinal plants, networking of the countries, sectors, sustainable use of medicinal plants were among the major resolutions adopted at the meet.
Nearly 500 stakeholders participated in the meet jointly organised by the SVU’s Dept of Botany and the AP Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Board, Hyderabad.
