More opportunities for women in higher education: Ponmudy
Staff Reporter
Today, more girls appeared for SSLC and higher secondary exams than boys
KILAKARAI: Enrolment of women in institutions of higher learning, especially in professional courses, was more now than in the past, thanks to the efforts made by Dravidian leaders such as Periyar, Anna and M. Karunanidhi, said the Minister for Higher Education, K. Ponmudy, here on Saturday.
Addressing the students of Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women on the 17th Graduation Day, Dr. Ponmudy pointed out that in 1950, only 14 per cent of women were literate in the State.
But, in 2001, it had touched 66 per cent. Today, more girls appeared for SSLC and higher secondary examinations than boys, he said.
There was a time when education was denied to women, due to superstitious beliefs.
But there was a tremendous transformation now in the society’s mindset that provided more opportunities for women in higher education.
The Minister recalled that it was Periyar who mooted the idea of providing equal share in property for women in 1929. It was enacted as a law in Tamil Nadu in 1989. Now it was a model for the nation.
Dr. Ponmudy presented diploma certificates to 237 graduates.
K. Hasan Ali, MLA, presided. Suba. Thangavelan, Minister for Slum Clearance and Accommodation, M.S.K. Bhavani Rajendran, MP, Sheriffa Azeez, Director for Girls Institutions, Seethakathi Trust, and V.N.A. Jalal, General Manager, Seethakathi Trust, participated.
