Mob violence blamed on police, judicial system failure
S. Vijay Kumar
MADURAI: National Human Rights Commission chairperson S. Rajendra Babu has blamed incidents of mob violence in some northern States on the failure of the police and the judicial system.
The NHRC is concerned over the instances of thieves/suspects being lynched or beaten up in public. “If the judicial system functions properly, if the police system functions properly, there will be no cause for dissatisfaction. If there is no dissatisfaction, there will be no mob violence. Because there is dissatisfaction among the mob, they think they will not get justice. That should not happen,” he said, in an interview to The Hindu here on Friday.
Since the system was failing, people were taking the law into their own hands. The police and the judicial system had to be strengthened, he said.
He was happy with compliance with the commission’s recommendations. “So far as my recommendations are concerned, there has not been an instance of non-compliance. Though there was some dilly-dallying, ultimately all my recommendations were accepted. While dealing with matters, we involve every stakeholder concerned. ”
“Moral authority”
Asked whether the commission needed more powers, Mr. Rajendra Babu said it played the role of a father in the family wherein only moral authority was involved.
