Budgetary allocations for SC, STs ‘insufficient’
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The budgetary allocations for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are not sufficient to meet the growing expenditure in the welfare hostels and disbursing of scholarships, Students Federation of India All-India vice-president K. Hari Kishore has said.
Dismissing the tall claims made by the State government that there was a 40 per cent increase in budgetary allocations for the welfare of SC/ST students, he said that the decision to raise the minimum income ceiling for availing of scholarships from Rs.65,000 to Rs.1 lakh would increase the number of students availing of SC scholarships to 12 lakhs.
The number of students availing of BC scholarships rose to 8.2 lakhs.
This would raise the expenditure for disbursing scholarships to Rs.1,650 crore, while the government had allocated a paltry Rs.1,060 crores, he pointed out.
The SFI leader also made light of the recent visits of MLAs to the welfare hostels stating that the visits were a mere eyewash.
