Freed fishermen to reach today

Staff Reporter

Nagercoil: All 47 fishermen from Thoothur, Chinnathurai, Enayam, Neerodi, Kurumpanai and Vallavilai areas in the coastal villages of the district will reach Tuticorin on Monday who were expected to be released by the Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday.

According to sources, as many as 62 fishermen ventured in to the sea for fishing in six mechanised boats. While they were fishing, the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly captured them and kept in Varthalakundu island. Later they were shifted to Kallupatti. However, following a request from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh steps were taken by the Central Government to ensure the early release of the fishermen from the district. In the first phase 47 fishermen were released and they were expected to reach their native villages on Monday evening. Meanwhile steps had already been taken to release the remaining 15 fishermen, according to official sources.
