dated March 10, 1958: Language conference

Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, addressing the all-India Language Conference convened by the Organisation for the Advancement of National Languages at the University Institute in Calcutta on March 8, declared that the vital question of all-India language for official purpose was not a political one and should be treated at the same level as other important subjects such as the food question. Rajaji warned the Central Government that their Hindi plan would lead to the disintegration of the country. He agreed that after the attainment of independence they had the option to reject English but pointed out that the reason why they did not do away with English during the last 11 years was that it suited them to keep it for various purposes.
