innovative spirit: Mechanical Engineering students displaying a robot designed by them in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. VISAKHAPATNAM: Students unleashed talent and realized their potential at SANGHARSH 2008, a two-day national technical festival organized by GITAM University on Saturday and Sunday. Students picked their choice with the options open either for the high flown Robotics or the lighter side of Mechanical Engineering. The Robotics Challenge ‘Minerva’ comprised two events- Object Picking and Line Follower. ‘Exegisis,’ the paper presentation programme, was a success. ‘Concurso,’ the Technical Quiz, attracted a big number of teams to challenge one another. The Project X ‘Hedera’ provided a great opportunity for hands on work testing one’s ability to create an engineer’s piece with spare material. ‘Artilugio,’ the contraptions event inspired by the cartoons of scientist Rube Goldberg was yet another highlight. The festival of the kind was organised by the department after a long time. Visakhpatnam Port Trust’s Chief Mechanical Engineer S.F.Mumford inaugurated the festival on Saturday. He stressed the versatility of mechanical engineering and the need to build upon one’s knowledge. GITAM University Vice-Chancellor M.Gangadhar Rao and Director GITAM Institute of Technology V.V.Kutumba Rao spoke on the importance of creativity. Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering M.R.S.Satyanarayana presented a report on the achievements and updates in the department. A.V.S.T. Kumar, DGM of Essar Steel Ltd, co-sponsor of the event, and representatives of Altair Engineering, crown sponsors, delivered the key note addresses. Director (Technology) of NSTL Debasis Chakraborthi participated in the valedictory. Innovative modelsStudents came up with interesting models like ‘Power-Saver Step,’ to reuse energy, ‘Wired All Terrain Rover,’ ‘Independent Suspension System,’ and ‘Load Carrier.’ Besides technology-related events, ‘Infudir,’ the B-Plans, were presented by ‘future managers.’ ‘Catch the Lepricon,’ the treasure hunt, ‘Adreno Pack,’ the skill games and ‘Ludique,’ the odd one out puzzle, were the spot events that made students recharge themselves.
