BANGALORE: Joint Secretary of the Karnataka State Hockey Association T. Shanmugham passed away at Arani (Vellore) early on Sunday morning. ‘Sunny’ as he was popularly called died after a tragic road accident. The 61-year-old had a long stint with the Karnataka State Hockey Association. He was a former player, an umpire, a technical official and an administrator. Shanmugham was also the liaison for the media and took it upon himself to keep the press informed about almost anything connected with State and National hockey. Shanmugham started his career as an athlete with a preference for the high jump event. He was inspired to take up hockey after watching former MEG players V.J. Peter and Manuel. He turned out for Primrose Hockey Club, Bangalore Youths and Wanderers before being enlisted by CIL. Sunny worked as a telecom engineer and retired as a Junior Scientific Officer with the defence organisation. Shanmugham played for the State from 1967 to 1981 and played in the Nationals from 1972 to 1979. After retiring from the game, Shanmugham took up many roles starting as a qualified national umpire and progressing to being a technical officer in numerous tournaments. The Karnataka State Hockey Association Secretary K. Krishnamurthy said it was an irreparable loss to the hockey fraternity. The last rites will be performed on Monday at Kalapally Cemetary. — Special Correspondent
