Mumbai: The BCCI-promoted DLF Indian Premier League Twenty20 has come as a boon to a number of junior cricketers in India. The IPL’s decision to fix a base payment of $20,000 to those who have not played the Ranji Trophy and $50,000 to those who have has met with the approval of the cricketing fraternity, though there have been whispers that it would spoil the development process of the young cricketers. It is up to the eight franchisees to offer the cricketers more than the amount of money determined by the BCCI. On Saturday, Sachin Tendulkar — the icon and captain of the Mumbai Indians who will receive 15 per cent more than Sanath Jayauriya’s $975,000 for a year — was asked to comment on the money India’s young cricketers are likely to get from the IPL Twenty20 competition. “Why not? They’ve made a lot of sacrifices by remaining focused on the game (and making it a career). The money will enable them to provide a comfortable living to their families. I don’t think it’s harmful,” said Tendulkar, at the unveiling of his team’s logo at a city hotel. Juniors who play in the BCCI’s age-group competitions receive 2.6 per cent of the annual gross receipts. — Special Correspondent
