Sir, — After a long gap of five months, a Mayor has been elected. He has given several promises such as ensuring drinking water, better roads, curbing malaria and the like. In its manifesto, the Bharatiya Janata Party promised to form ward committees as envisaged in a government notification. The very purpose of forming the committees is to ensure administrative transparency. Although the notification was issued some time ago, it is surprising that the system is not in place. Despite repeated pleas, no action has been taken. It is imperative to form committees in all 60 wards of the corporation if the city is to progress. However, the move to constitute a ward committee in Shivabagh area is appreciable. The authorities are requested to take further action in this regard. J.F. D’Souza Mangalore Complete road workSir, — The Bangalore international airport at Devanahalli is scheduled to be commissioned on March 28. But the roads connecting this airport to the silicon valley of India are not ready. There is no point in declaring the airport open as travellers will be put to a lot of hardships to reach their designated places. It is said that it takes nearly three hours to reach the airport from Electronic City. The road to the dream destination is always struck with traffic jams, not to speak of numerous traffic signals. Defer the commissioning by two months by which time the access roads from Bangalore city to airport should be ready. Safety and convenience of passengers should get priority. B H. Shanmukhappa Davanagere Retain HAL airportSir, — It is time that authorities took a firm decision on retaining HAL Airport for domestic flights. They should realise the advantage of having two airports as the passenger traffic can be shared and the load on the new airport reduced. Bangalore has the advantage of a fully developed airport which should not be allowed to go waste just for honouring the agreement with BIAL which was made without considering the future problems. V.S. Ganeshan Bangalore Increase busesSir, — Although bus services from Kengeri to Kempe Gowda Bus Stand and K.R. Market are adequate, there are very few services from K.S. Town to Shivajinagar, particularly during peak hours. A large number of people working in companies around Mahatma Gandhi Road and Cunningham Road have to catch three buses to reach their destination. The number of buses on route No. 222-E, plying between K.S. Town and Shivajinagar, should be increased during peak hours. K.S. Sundaram Bangalore Garbage bins neededSir, — Recently, Vidyamanyanagara II stage in Andhrahalli came under the control of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, but garbage bins are seen nowhere. Unscientific disposal of waste will only create health hazards for the people. Timely action by the authorities concerned will be appreciated. K.R. Raghavendra Rao Bangalore Streamline trafficSir, — Of late, the vehicular traffic on 31st Main Road and 9th Cross at the intersection in J.P. Nagar. It starts from the Oxford College at J.P. Nagar Phase-I. The pedestrians, especially schoolchildren and the elderly, are put to hardship. To streamline the traffic on this stretch, a zebra crossing may be provided to Ramdev Stationery Store in front of Anabin Ashram at 9 th cross, J.P. Nagar Phase-I. The authorities are requested to take immediate action in this regard. N. Raju Bangalore Readers can send their letters to: letters.mangalore@ thehindu.co.in
