Flights cancelled due to fog
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Four flights had to be cancelled and 25 others were affected because of heavy fog at Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Sunday causing inconvenience to many passengers. As a result of the nearly four-hour low visibility period, the schedule of some late afternoon flights too got affected.
According to a Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) official, the runway visibility dropped to 500 metres around 6-15 a.m. Within 15 minutes, it further dropped to 250 metres forcing the authorities to initiate the low visibility procedure (LVP). The LVP remained in operation for nearly four hours and was terminated around 10-30 a.m. when visibility on the runway increased to 1,600 metres. During this period, 44 flights – including 30 domestic and 14 international – operated. With only the primary runway being used, most of the flights landed using CAT-III-B system. No domestic flight could take off till 9-15 a.m. The period also saw 14 flights, two international and 12 domestic, being diverted from their original routes.
