Rs. 50 cr. spent under Yashasvini

240 from Kodagu make use of benefits


Madikeri: The State Government has spent Rs. 50 crore under the Yashasvini healthcare scheme, benefiting 27,080 people during 2007-08. As many as 23,15,000 people have registered their names for the benefits under the scheme this year. Names can be registered till May 31.

This is more than Rs. 30 crore collected by way of registration fee under the scheme from members of cooperative societies all over the State. In effect, the Government has spent an additional Rs. 20 crore on the scheme, which will be in operation till May. Registrations will begin on June 1 and end on May 31 every year, according to Mohammad Zafrulla Khan, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Kodagu.

He told The Hindu that treatment and surgeries under the scheme covered 1,600 diseases. In addition, deliveries, post-maternal care of infants, accidents due to agriculture implements, drowning, dog bites, snake bites, goring and electricity-related accidents, and angioplasty which was added in July 1, 2006, were also included in the scheme.

In Kodagu, 41,987 people had registered their names of the target of one lakh during this year.

As many as 240 people had availed themselves of benefits such as surgeries and treatment from three recognised hospitals in the district at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh.

On the contrary, Rs. 54.34 lakh was collected from them as registration fee, Rs. 120 from each member, Mr. Khan said.

The recognised hospitals in Kodagu were the District Government Hospital and Vivus Hospital in Madikeri, and Atreya Hospital in Virajpet. If minimum requirements such as number of beds could be met, recognition could be given to a hospital in Somwarpet taluk, Mr. Khan said.
