Reduce bus fare

Introduction of air bus services in Coimbatore is a welcome step. However, the steep rise in the minimum fare from Rs. 2 to Rs. 5 has hit the ordinary man badly. Since most people who travel in local buses are from the lower and middle classes, the minimum fare should be brought down from Rs. 5 to Rs. 3.

Power interruption

Interruption of power supply by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is becoming a regular affair affecting the public, especially students who are to prepare for their examinations. It is seen in Coimbatore and suburbs that the interruptions occur regularly from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and between 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. and also during night in many areas. The Minister of Electricity had promised that there won’t be any interruption at least for the domestic consumers. This seems to be only on paper and not in action.

Stagger power cuts

The State Government has forecast power shortage till June and everyone anticipates power cut. But no one in Coimbatore knows when the power will go.

If the Electricity Board intends to cut power for two hours a day, it should stagger the cut - one hour in the morning and the evening after announcing the timings through the media.

There should be no load shedding during the time of public examinations.

For noble creatures

Last week I had a heart wrenching experience in losing my Rajapalayam dog due to poor medical facilities. Its demise was due to wrong administration of drugs. How many of us have lost our pets, our animals and sometimes also our life support this way. This triggered a resolution in me. I had the opportunity to meet a People For Animal coordinator.

We discussed the need to have a decent facility for animal care in our city. We have only an ambition but no finance. But a heart to achieve this dream that could spell a better standard for these noble creatures.

Drug prices

I had gone to an eye hospital for treatment of eye infection. On the first visit the doctor prescribed an antibiotic tablet and an eye ointment. On the second visit too an antibiotic tablet and an eye ointment were prescribed.

But they were different from the ones prescribed earlier. Later I found out that the medicines prescribed on both occasions were the same but the product names were different.

There was a wide variation in the price too. I could not understand was why there was such a variation in the price for the same drugs manufactured by two companies.

Family cards

My brother and I had our names deleted from our father’s ration card. We then applied for separate cards since we are married. We were issued token numbers 4913 and 4194 on January 23, 2007.

Recently, the Government had announced that family cards had been issued to all who had applied up to December 31, 2007.

Since we have not been issued separate ration cards, we are unable to get gas connections.

Many visits to the taluk office proved futile. We were told that the cards have not yet been received.

Till date we have not yet received any communication whatsoever from the authorities concerned.

Mosquito menace

Kovaipudur, a suburb of Coimbatore city, faces mosquito problem. According to media reports, time and again fogging is done to contain the menace. But suburbs like Kovaipudur are not even sprayed with insecticides. Nor are overflowing drains there cleaned.
