In unison: Members of the AIADMK staging a demonstration at Valparai in Coimbatore on Sunday.
VALPARAI: More than 300 members of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Sunday staged a demonstration here protesting against the State Government for its alleged lethargy in arriving at a wage settlement for plantation workers. The party’s State minorities’ wing secretary Liaquat Ali Khan presided over the demonstration in front of the Municipal Office, in the presence of S.P. Velumani, Perur MLA and district secretary of the party. They workers raised slogans demanding a minimum daily wage of Rs.100 for plantation workers.
The protesters said that estate workers here have been getting a wage much lower than that of their counterparts in Kerala.
Stating that the workers were in debt trap due to low wages, Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan urged the Government to take firm steps to ensure a daily wage of not less than Rs.100 for estate workers leading a decent living.
Cutting across the party lines, the joint committee of trade unions had organised a road blockade and fast last month seeking early solution to the dispute.
