Sale of subsidised cement expected to go up

V. Venkatasubramanian

This follows Government announcement to make available the commodity for repair works

KANCHEEPURAM: Sale of subsidised cement through Civil Supplies Corporation is expected to pick up in the coming months in view of the Government’s decision to meet requirements of house-owners wanting to take up repair works. Enquiries revealed that so far, around 5,500 cement bags were sold at Rs.200 per bag through seven CSC godowns in the district. Following the recent announcement that subsidised cement would be made available for taking up repair works, the number of queries in this regard has increased, officials said.

Initially, 200 cement bags were allotted for construction of a dwelling unit up to an area of 1,000 sq.ft. Subsequently, it was increased to 400 bags per applicant, who were asked to submit their applications to the respective Tahsildar along with plan sanction copy.

Release orders were issued after proper scrutiny of their applications. However, the scheme did not attract much patronage as a majority of middle class and upper middle class people preferred to construct their houses on contract basis. The lower class or Below Poverty Line section applied for financial assistance through various Central and State government schemes.

Subsidised cement would be available at the following CSC godowns : Sirukarveripakkam near Kancheepuram (27277179); Panchalampattu near Sriperumpudur (27162293); Vedapalayam near Uthiramerur (27272263); Silavattam near Madurantakam (27552413); Thimmavaram near Chengalpattu (27431724); Mettupalayam near Thirukazhukundram (27447195) and Vilvaroyanallur near Cheyyur (27553953).
