LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT: Former Judge of the Supreme Court S. Natarajan addressing the anniversary celebration of the club in Madurai on Saturday.

MADURAI: Clubs must not only be centres of recreation and leisure but also centres of excellence, promoting art and culture, according to former Supreme Court Judge S. Natarajan.

Participating in the 125th anniversary of The Madurai Union Club on Saturday, he said social work to community at large should be undertaken by clubs in order to dispel the notion that they existed solely for the benefit of members.

Recalling his association with a club in Salem, he said it was constructive and lively.

It was said that the fate of Madras Presidency was decided by the Madras Cosmopolitan Club, he recalled. “Clubs have great value not only for its members but also for the public at large.”

Maintaining quality

Identifying with the difficulties faced by office-bearers in raising funds as the scope of clubs had enlarged to include outdoor sports and social events, he said though membership had to be increased to meet the demands, quality should not be sacrificed in the process.

The standards and respectability of the club should be maintained and it should remain a desirable place for relaxation, he added.

Club secretary S. Prabhu presented the activities’ report, while its president S. Rengarajan introduced the chief guest.
