New policy will boost small units, says official

Staff Reporter

11 out of 13 blocks in Madurai identified as backward

MADURAI: In the present environment of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, the new policy for micro, small and medium (MSM) industries unveiled by the State government recently will create a suitable environment for the sector to grow, General Manager of District Industries Centre (DIC) S.A.P. Vairamani has said.

He was speaking on the new policy at a seminar held by the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, DIC, and Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC) here on Wednesday.

He said to ensure equitable development in all regions, the policy had identified 251 backward blocks in which incentives would be provided for setting up industries. In Madurai, 11 of the 13 blocks had been classified as backward.

Though all policies routinely provided subsidies for women, physically handicapped and the SCs/STs, Mr. Vairamani said the MSM policy had gone one step further and extended concessions to transgenders also. The implementation of the policy would be supervised by an empowered committee chaired by Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy.

Senior Regional Manager of TIIC, T. Dhanasekaran said the service sector constituted 59 per cent of the State’s Gross Domestic Product. The aim of the policy was to increase it to around 80 per cent. The policy also encouraged seminar and workshops to increase entrepreneurs’ skills and attending international trade fairs.

Lead District Manager KN. Subramanian assured the business community of the full support of the banking sector. At present, in Madurai more than 60 per cent of the credit was disbursed to agriculture.
