Union Minister distributes loan assistances

THANJAVUR: Increased allotment of 24 per cent to the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare in the Union Budget for 2008-2009 showed the commitment of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre for the welfare of women and children, said the Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam here on Saturday.

He distributed loans to women Self-help Groups to mark the International Women’s Day organised by Indian Overseas Bank, the lead bank of the district. He said that a sum of Rs.500 crore has been allocated in the budget for providing insurance cover to members of Women SHGs.

Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar said that there are 15,208 women SHGs in Thanjavur district. Of them 14,117 got financial assistance like revolving fund, loan from banks, direct loans etc.

The Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank T. Veerappan said that at the all India level, IOB has disbursed loans to the tune of Rs.1229.03 crore to 2.17 lakh women SHGs.

In Thanjavur district the bank has provided loans to 6,557 women SHGs. In the current year 1392 groups have got a loan of Rs.12 crore. A total of 4,000 women SHG members have been trained by the Rural Training Centre of the bank on various skills.

The Minister disbursed loans to the tune of Rs.1.59 crore to 128 women SHGs at the function.

Mahesh Krishnaswamy, MLA, N.V. Baskaran, Assistant General Manager, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vetriselvan, The Lead District Manager, and Jaganathan, Director, Rural Training Centre participated in the function.
